Local History

Genealogical resources available at the Local History Center include newspapers, census data, maps, city directories, Soundex, passenger indexes, journals and, last but not least, we have an extensive obituary index of the residents of Paterson 1905-1997 that is periodically updated when time permits.

The Palsplus (our consortium) Reference Committee has prepared a “pathfinder” to help one understand some of the prominent resources for NJ Local History and genealogical research.  The link to this valuable information is: Pathfinder.

World Vital Records contains a massive library with billions of family history and genealogical records, and millions of family trees.  Access key collections: Complete U.S. Federal Census images and indexes from 1790 to 1940; military records; enhanced Social Security Death Index (SSDI) records; millions of newspaper articles; unique, exclusive local and international collections.

All access into the Local History Room and Collection will be by appointment only.  Schedule appointments through the Reference Department – 973-321-1223 ext. 2295 or via e-mail.  Our Local History Librarian is Bruce Bardarik.
